10 Years

jonathanspence.com in 2001

This month makes 10 years that I have been doing web development, and 10 years that jonathanspence.com has had it’s own domain and hosting. Lots of things have changed, yet the site is still remarkably similar to what it was like back then.

This design is pretty much the same one it has had since 2002, although I have moved from my own custom built CMS to WordPress, which makes things a lot easier to manage.

I’m working on updating all the old info, since I managed to go almost two years between updates this time.

Database Change

I moved the site to a different database server, so hopefully the speed issues will be fixed now. I am really liking WordPress, the plugins make it easy to do a lot of different stuff that would be difficult to hack in manually.

Cryptonomicon

I just finished reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson and it was pretty good. The pacing was very slow, and the book felt like it could have used a few more rounds with the editor tightening up the plot, but I enjoyed it overall. It was nice to read a book that was so accurate and realistic with computer technology. I don’t think I would recommend it to someone who isn’t a computer geek and hasn’t had a few advanced math classes, since there is a lot of terminology that would be incomprehensible.

There seems to be a lot of trouble with the database server that is hosting this site. If it doesn’t clear up pretty soon, I am going to move it to a server I know is stable.

I just switched over the wordpress version of the site to be what you can see. I still have some tweaks to finish before it is totally done, but it’s here now.

So, Yeah, It’s Been A While

I wasn’t trying to set a record for how long to go between posts, it just happened that way. I finally decided my homemade CMS/Weblog script wasn’t going to cut it, so I converted the site to WordPress. All of my old posts are imported, minus any pictures that used to be there. It’s amazing how strange it is to go back and remember all the things that were happening back then. I figure this time I might actually update more often, I have more to say now than I once did, and wordpress makes it a lot easier to update everything. Of course, I could set another record, time will tell.
